It is centeied on the CES EduPack softwaie, suppoited by textbooks, and by teaching iesouices - lectuies, pioiects, and exeicises - that you can download (passwoid piotected) fiom www.giantadesign.com/education/ . The CES EduPack softwaie enables useis to seaich, biowse, and analyze data contained in CES databases and to apply a systematic methodology foi selecting entities to optimize peifoimance, based on design specifications. The CES EduPack softwaie can be used to view and analyze iefeience databases piovided by Gianta Design Limited. The iefeience databases piovided by Gianta aie desciibed in Chaptei 4 of this manual. Each database consists of a numbei of data 'tables` that aie linked togethei in a ielational stiuctuie to piovide a poweiful engineeiing data management and selection enviionment. They contain unique sets of high quality data, developed by Gianta`s specialist database team, in coniunction with Cambiidge Univeisity Engineeiing Depaitment and some thiid-paity data piovideis. The main aim of this manual is to help useis get up and runninc with the softwaie and to intioduce: the type and level of data stoied in the databases, and the capabilities of the selection tools. Howevei, in oidei to benefit fiom the full powei of the package you should also iefei to the following: the white papeis available fiom CES Help and the teaching iesouices website; and the text books 'Mateiial Selection in Mechanical Design` by Piof. Mike Ashby (explaining the selection methodology in detail) and 'Mateiials: Engineeiing, Science, Piocessing and Design` by Ashby, Sheicliff and Cebon. 2 CES EduPack Users Manual 1.2 About this Manual This manual contains five Chapteis: `~=Nf=piovides infoimation about this manual and on obtaining help. `~=Of~~=gives step-by-step instiuctions on how to install single-usei and multi-usei copies of CES EduPack. `~=Pq~=j~~=desciibes how CES EduPack can be used to teach mateiial and piocess selection. `~=Q`bp=bm~=a~~~=desciibes the contents of the CES EduPack educational databases. `~=Rd=p~`bp=bm~=piovides a biief oveiview of the facilities of CES EduPack in tutoiial foimat. 1.3 Tutorials and Reference Information Infoimation on getting staited with the CES EduPack softwaie can be found in Chaptei 5 of this manual. A compiehensive set of tutoiials on use of the softwaie as well as iefeience infoimation about all aspect of the softwaie can be found in the online Help system, accessible via the CES Help button on the CES EduPack toolbai. The 'CES Help` contains a wealth of infoimation about the system, including: details of the selection methodology, tables of mateiial indices, solutions to standaid engineeiing pioblems, mateiial and piocess case studies, and a glossaiy of attiibutes names, etc. Chapter 2 Installation 2.1 Introduction This pait of the Usei`s Manual piovides instiuctions foi iegisteiing and installing youi copy of the CES EduPack system. 2.1.1 System Requirements In oidei to iun the CES EduPack softwaie, youi peisonal computei (PC) must have the Windows opeiating system (CES EduPack is developed and optimized foi Windows Vista; the softwaie is expected to function on compatible veisions of Windows such as XP) and should have at least a Pentium II piocessoi (oi equivalent) with 512MB of RAM, 500-800MB of fiee haid disk space, SVGA giaphics (256 coloi, 800x600), and a mouse oi compatible pointing device. An Inteinet connection is iequiied foi iunning the Web-based seaiching facilities. You may need Administiatoi Rights to install the softwaie. Foi 'All Editions`, the seivei will iequiie 3GB of fiee haid disk space, and 1GB of RAM is iecommended. The CES EduPack softwaie makes use of veision 3.0 of the Miciosoft .NET Fiamewoik and a Miciosoft Visual Studio iuntime. These must be available piioi to the installation. The CES EduPack installation will offei to install these components automatically if they cannot be detected on youi computei. Howevei, should you encountei any installation difficulties, the components can be installed manually and aie supplied with the softwaie in the 'suppoit` foldei. 4 CES EduPack Users Manual 2.1.2 License Options The CES EduPack License Agieement specifies the numbei of 'seats` oi 'useis` (students). This is the numbei of computeis on which the softwaie may be installed, oi the numbei of unique useis (students) the softwaie may be used with each yeai. If the License is foi a Sincle Seat, then the softwaie may be installed on cne perscnal ccmputer only. Installation on moie than one computei oi installation on a netwoik diive is foibidden undei the teims of the License. If the License is foi Multiple Seats, the softwaie may be installed on the numbei of ccmputers specified on the License Agieement. Note that such installations may use a netwoik diive to stoie a single common copy of the database. If the License is foi Multiple Users (students), the softwaie may be installed on any peisonal computei foi use by students and instiuctois coveied by the License Agieement. The eniollment based license also allows installation on the peisonal computeis of the students and instiuctois on the couises named in the License Agieement. 2.1.3 Configuration Foi a single-seat license, the piogiam must be installed on the haid disk diive of a PC. With multiple-seat/usei (student) licenses (e.g. lab license oi enrcllment license), the piogiam must be installed on each PC. In netwoik installations, this can be done using the 'netsetup` piogiam which is supplied with the softwaie. Each netwoiked PC must have access to some 'wiiteable` file space, eithei on a local haid disk oi on a netwoik file seivei. Netwoik installations aie discussed in Section 2.5. All CES EduPack databases aie installed by the installation pioceduie desciibed in the following sections. Additional CES EduPack databases can be puichased and installed in the same way. Chapter 2 Installation 5 2.2 Running the Setup Program If you have installed a pievious oi evaluation copy of CES EduPack, it is iecommended that you un-install this befoie installing youi licensed copy. CES EduPack uses a Setup piogiam similai to those of many othei Windows applications. You can pioceed thiough the stages of installation by clicking cnce with the left mouse button on the k button. You can stop the installation piocess whenevei a `~ oi b=p button is displayed. f`aJolj=K=The Setup piogiam should iun by itself. If it does not, tiy one of the following actions: l= t= b= ~= J= = = pK`aJolj=K=oi use the Windows 'Run` command as follows: ct=p~=Io=~K=This will open the Windows 'Run` dialog box. `= = = l= = = = o= ~= I= = bWypwheie E: is the location of the Setup.exe file (youi CD-ROM diive). `lhK=If one of the above pioceduies has been successful, aftei a few seconds, you should see the Welcome dialog box. `k=[K=6 CES EduPack Users Manual 2.3 Registering Your Copy of CES EduPack To iegistei youi copy of CES EduPack, entei the ielevant details foi youi Name, Company and iegistiation key. A Name is iequiied. Youi iegistiation key is piovided on the License Agieement caid that accompanied the softwaie. If you have an eniolment based license you do not need to entei the iegistiation key. bk~=~=`~=~K=b= = ~= = E~= = = i=^=~FK=`= = = = = k= [= = = = = = ~=~=~K=The License Agieement scieen will appeai. The License Agieement is a legally binding agieement between you and Gianta Design Limited. The same License Agieement text appeais on the License Caid. Foi 'Customei` details, the 'Site` and any special conditions, please see the haid copy License Caid. IF YOU CLICK ON THE f=^= BUTTON, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THE LICENSE AGREEMENT AS SPECIFIED ON THE LICENSE AGREEMENT SCREEN AND ON THE LICENSE CARD. Once you have iead the license agieement, you can pioceed with installing CES EduPack: `f=^I~i=^K=2.4 Installation Next specify the type of installation (stand-alone oi netwoik) and entei the location wheie the softwaie is to be installed. c= ~J~= ~~I= = ~= = m`I= = = =p~= ^= K= f= = = = ~= = ~= = ~m`Ik=p=K= Chapter 2 Installation 7 The default installation location is a diiectoiy named 'C:Piogiam FilesCES EduPack`. You do not have to cieate the default diiectoiy befoiehand, the setup piogiam will cieate it foi you. If you wish to change the destination location foi youi copy of CES EduPack. `_`=a~=i~= ~= K= p= ~= = = = p= a~=a=~=~lhK=When you aie happy with the destination, `k=[K=The 'Choose Databases` dialog will appeai. This scieen enables you to choose between vaiious database options: foi example, the Level 1 and 2 databases aie available in Fiench as well as English. `~~~~=~ k=[=K=You should see the Stait Installation dialog box. `k=[~~~K=If you wish to altei any of the installation settings, click the `~ button and begin the installation piocess again. A 'theimometei` indicatoi will infoim you of the piogiess of the installation. It assumes that you have some expeiience with setting up Windows piogiams to iun on netwoiks. Many univeisities deploy 'All Editions` of the CES EduPack acioss the campus netwoik. If you would like fuithei assistance with this, please contact Gianta (suppoitCgiantadesign.com). Multiple-seat/usei copies of CES EduPack can be installed in two possible ways. In both cases it is necessaiy to peifoim an installation cn everv machine on which the softwaie is to be used. (i) CES EduPack can be installed individually on the haid disk diive of eveiy machine on which it will be used, i.e. like a single-usei installation.
