Battlefield
Jordin Sparks
19/Jive
On her second album, 2007 'American Idol' champ Jordin Sparks collaborates with a small army of A-list songwriters and producers, including T-Pain and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder. A few ditties sound like Kelly Clarkson rejects, but Sparks' effervescent voice sparkles on state-of-the-art pop concoctions such as 'Watch You Go,' 'S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)' (which samples '80s disco queen Shannon) and the martial single from which 'Battlefield' takes its title. In stores Tuesday, July 21. Grade: B+
Jordin Sparks didn't get any traction until she received a boost from Chris Brown via their duet 'No Air,' the one moment on her 2007 eponymous debut that felt unquestionably modern, so it makes perfect sense that her second album,Battlefield, ditches almost all lingering American Idol pageantry for stylized pop and R&B pitched halfway between Rihanna (whose 'S.O.S.' Is shamelessly rewritten. Oct 03, 2009 Jordin Sparks' official music video for 'Battlefield'. Click to listen to Jordin Sparks on Spotify: As featured on.

Horehound
The Dead Weather
Third Man/Warner Bros.
Another year, another extracurricular rock band featuring Jack White of the lost-in-limbo White Stripes. The Dead Weather teams our hero (on drums!) with singer Alison Mosshart (of the Kills), guitarist Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and bassist Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs). Inspired madness ensues, via the psychedelic-blues stomper '60 Feet Tall,' the hip-hop-flavored 'I Cut like a Buffalo' and 'New Pony,' a heavy-metal update of a Bob Dylan oldie. Grade: A-
Leave This Town
Daughtry
RCA
On the sequel to his eponymous group's gazillion-selling 2006 debut, 'American Idol' alumnus Chris Daughtry (they're everywhere) doesn't mess with his commercially successful formula. 'Leave This Town' strikes a pleasant if predictable balance between arena-rock anthems (the aptly titled 'No Surprise') and hoist-those-cell-phones power ballads ('September'). Too bad there's nary an unexpected twist, with the possible exception of Vince Gill's cameo on the Goo Goo Dolls-y 'Tennessee Line.' Grade: B
PLAYLIST:
Five songs you should check out this week:
Shakira, 'She Wolf': Arguably the catchiest song about lycanthropy since Warren Zevon's 'Werewolves of London.'
Modest Mouse, 'Autumn Beds': Crank that banjo!
Nelly Furtado, 'Manos Al Aire': First taste of the pop singer's Spanish-language album 'Mi Plan' (out Tuesday, Sept. 15) translates into another hit.
Mary J. Blige Featuring Drake, 'The One': Apparently, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul didn't get Jay-Z's memo about the death of Auto-Tune.
Alice in Chains, 'A Looking in View': Seven years after singer Layne Staley's death, the grunge band returns with an epic single, with William DuVall now handling vocals.
