Greetings fellow fans of one of the best games in the world, Descent v1. I wanted to put together a howto to help others get more actively involved here in PBF, as it can be very daunting at first. I wanted to give credit to Pierzasty for putting together some of the information that I will be providing in this post. I am going to be speaking primarily for the Advanced Campaign, not Vanilla games (base game) PBF. Do not worry, PBF in itself looks intimidating, but it is rather easy once you start to get the hang of things. Most people you will be playing with will be patient or will want to learn with you. This game isn’t really a race, you will likely be playing the game for a year or more, so it is important to understand the time commitment.
First things first, how do you find a PBF?
Anyone can play a PBF, no matter what your experience level is (game wise, not PBF wise). If this is your first time trying the advanced campaign, it will take a bit longer, as you will likely have to play with more than 2 people total. Before starting a game, I would highly recommend reading through some of the PBF games in this forum, showing how people post just to get yourself familiar with the process. I would try to familiarize yourself with basic concepts of how the Advanced Campaign and the rules work. Then when you feel comfortable to start a game, just post a thread stating specifically what you are looking to do.
Example:

At least one person needs to be doing the map/character updates. The best way to do this is by using the Tileset System along with Immortal’s Map Package.
I would recommend both players use it as it can be very tough to track the moves and know when you guard/play interrupts and where general LoS works, but for the most part only 1 person needs to do the map updates. I have never done it, but you do not need to have a board set up at your own house/office/. You should be able to do everything directly from the PBF forums by looking at the map that is posted. Posting your moves and maps takes time and the more you are able to do it, the easier it will become.
In a PBF game, things can take days just to do a simple turn, so being able to post at least once a day is good etiquette for your other players. In a game that involves multiple heroes vs the OL, you can talk strategy or tactics in the thread itself, or do it privately, but when you do the actual moves you will BOLD what you are doing.
Updating the map is can be time consuming to the person doing it, so I like to be as descriptive as possible. Give starting position, equip/unequip weapons, play start of turn feats, choose which action you want to do-movement and actions (include fatigue usage too).

Once you decide what type of game you want to play, your players, the house rules, who will be doing map updates, the last thing you will need to do is decide on how you will be drawing your cards. Andrew_zz has made a great randomizer, but has been inactive lately, so I am not sure if it is open to others. Von_Paul has also made a web based one, but it is in the testing stage and only available for two people. Your best bet is to either draw randomly yourself (meaning you will just have to trust the other person) or have a Card Drawer pass you OL cards and feats when you get them. There are positives and negatives to both, but if you are first starting out, I would suggest getting a Card Drawer to draw you cards. They can private message or email them to you.
In that same thread, I usually go ahead and roll for the hero group with 4 piles of 3. Most of the experienced PBF players have been using the upgraded heroes shown in the house rules. There has been flexibility in the past where the hero group gets 5 piles of 3 and chooses from 4 piles, or 4 piles of 4 if the OL is planning on playing a good Avatar and he wants to give the heroes a better selection. You can choose to do it however you want, but I would suggest starting with 4 piles of 3. You can do that all randomly by using the 'Roll' button. I generally put a 30d48 in the roll portion, this will give you 30 random numbers and you lay out the first unique 12 numbers.

Once heroes and skills are picked, then continue to shopping phase, and letting the OL choose his Avatar, upgrade and plot as per the normal rules. There is some wiggle room that the OL and hero party can do. For instance if he wants to play a Humanoid based Avatar (Titan, Beastman Lord), then he can request that if Zyla is drawn to replace it with someone else, or if Kirga is picked, to not allow Boggs the Rat be picked in the inital skill draw (because Kirga with Boggs makes it tough for the OL at the beginning for spawning).
When all that is done, move to the How to start a game section of the How To.
